Summer may be in full force in the Valley of the Sun, but that doesn’t mean you have to hunker down indoors all day every day. Planning your outdoor excursions during the early morning or late evening hours means you can still enjoy the fresh air and scenery while avoiding the strongest heat of the day.

These outdoor activities for seniors offer plenty of options for getting out and exploring in and around Goodyear, Arizona, whether you’re exercising or simply appreciating your desert surroundings from your vantage point in the West Valley.

1. Estrella Mountain Regional Park

Nestled along the far west side of the South Mountain range, this park spans 20,000 acres of nature areas, hiking trails, wildlife, and more among desert, mountain and wetland terrain. Good news for early risers: The park opens at 6 a.m. daily year-round. Also be sure to check out the event schedule at Estrella Lakeside Amphitheater, and sunsets are simply spectacular from the Estrella Star Tower.

2. Roscoe Dog Park

Although you’ll find a private dog park at Robson Reserve at PebbleCreek, your four-legged friend is a terrific companion for exploring the Goodyear area. One spot you won’t want to miss is Roscoe Dog Park, a destination for off-leash exercise that has dedicated spaces to fit your dog’s personality — one area for passive pooches and another for more active dogs. Since it’s open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, you can visit early or late to beat the heat.

3. Wildlife World Zoo

Explore 125 acres of exotic animals, including a vast array of animals from Africa, the Americas and more. Members enjoy free admission, so you can visit again and again rather than trying to cover the entire zoo in a single day. Special senior rates are also available, and a number of rides and kid-friendly attractions make this an excellent option when grandkids come to visit.

4. Palm Valley Golf Club

No list of West Valley outdoor activities for seniors would be complete without golf. With a unique blend of three nine-hole courses, you’ll have plenty of variety for your golf game at the Palm Valley Golf Club. You can play three different 18-hole layouts suitable for beginners and experienced golfers alike. Member and public tee times are available, and the club also offers instructional programs, tournaments and other events.

5. Sahuaro Ranch Park

Combining both recreation and a look into the past, this park features a unique blend of historic ranch buildings, gardens, orchards and a historic rose garden, along with playgrounds, sporting fields and an off-leash dog park. Be sure to look for the peacocks and other animals that call this park home. Like other area parks, hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, although if you’d like to visit some of the historic features (including free tours), you’ll need to wind down your visit by sunset.

Establish a Home Base for Exploring

You could spend nearly endless hours exploring all the West Valley has to offer. Making your home in the area means you have convenient access to a wide array of parks and other attractions to visit all year long. Living at Robson Reserve at PebbleCreek means surrounding yourself with Southwestern beauty and attentive service that leaves you free to pursue your interests, including all the outdoor activities for seniors the area has to offer.
